Supplementing Vitamin C
Posted on October 29th, 2020
I don’t recommend supplementing your growing puppy with anything labeled for growth and development. It’s extremely important that Danes grow SLOWLY. Not reaching full maturity until 2 years of age.
THAT SAID, I highly recommend vitamin C! NOT CALCIUM!!! Specifically Ester-C. I order mine from Amazon, but it can be picked up in the grocery aisle. Vitamin C has so many benefits that breeders have known for a long time, but nutritionists are just starting to acknowledge.
Vitamin C helps boost immune systems, supports growing puppies through stressful events, and helps to harden cartilage. Which helps to prevent flat feet and weakness in rapidly growing puppies.
It’s one more thing I do for puppies during weaning to make sure they are as healthy and supported as possible. From the inside out. I also use it for my puppies that have their ears cropped. As this helps the process in hardening the soft cartilage, enabling them to stand.
I am NOT a nutritionist. And many years ago, when I had a teething puppy, with flat feet and ears that wouldn’t stand, I was at a loss and I asked my vet about using vitamin c. Her response was, as I’m sure most vet’s would be, was that there is no reason a healthy puppy on a good diet should need supplemented vitamin c. So I didn’t use it. Boy do I wish I had listened to my breeder friends on this one! I would have saved myself a lot of headache! Lol. I did eventually start using vitamin c and saw wonderful results. I wish I had tried it sooner in that case. So now, I incorporate it into our program to help everyone maintain their best immune system and structure.
